We caught Rhinolophus Ferumequinum, Rhinolophus blasius, Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus Mehelyi, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Pipistrellus Kuhli, Hypsugo Savi, Myotis Myotis, Myotis Cappacini, Myotis emarginatus, Myotis Mystancinus/Aurescens, Nyctalus Leisleri, Miniopteris Shreibersi, Myotis sp unidentifiable, V small Pip sp.
Lesvos October 2016
Scala Eresos as research centre
We caught Myotis Blythi, Pipistrellus Kuhli, Myotis cappacini, Pipistrellus Pipistrellus, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Rhinolophus Blasius, Rhinolphus Euryale, Rhinoplophus hipposideros and we recorded audibly Tadarida Teniotis. The turtles were fun in the pool nearby and the petrified forest we visited on the last day was so interesting.
Andros – June 2016
A beautiful island, close to Athens and full of lush gardens and rich valleys.
We caught Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Pipistrellus Kuhli, Hypsugo Savi, Rhinolophus Blasius, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis Bylthi, Myotis emerginatus, Myotis Aurescens, Plecotus Kolombatovici, plus we recorded audibly Tadarida teniotis, Myotis Cappacini/Daubentoni, and unidentified Myotis sp.
Kos – September 2015
We found the island to have fewer bats and fewer species than some, but still found 5 species in the hand including Greater Horseshoe Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Common Pipistrelle Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Kuhl’s Pipistrelle Pipistrellus kuhlii, Savi’s Pipistrelle Hypsugo savii, and Anatolian Serotine Eptesicus anatolicus, with European free-tailed Tadarida teniotis, Lesser Horseshoe Rhinolophus hipposideros, Noctule Nyctalus noctula, and an unidentified Myotis sp. recorded using detectors. Probably there are more species there to find!
Chios – May 2015
12 species recorded in the hand including Blasius’s horseshoe Rhinolophus blasii, greater horseshoe Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, lesser horseshoe Rhinolophus hipposideros, common pipistrelle Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Kuhl’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus kuhlii, soprano pipistrelle Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Savi’s pipistrelle Hypsugo savii, Geoffroy’s Myotis emarginatus, lesser mouse-eared Myotis blythii, Steppe whiskered Myotis aurascens, Balkan long-eared Plecotus kolombatovici, and Schreibers’ Miniopterus schreibersii, with European free-tailed Tadarida teniotis, noctule Nyctalus sp., serotine Eptesicus serotinus sp., and an unidentified horseshoe Rhinolophus sp. recorded using detectors.
Ikaria – September 2014
Ikaria trip was conducted with our friend and colleague Panagiotis, our with whom we collaborate with for most of the Greek island research trips. We caught 9 species in the hand, including common pipistrelle Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Blasius’s horseshoe Rhinolophus blasii, greater horseshoe Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, lesser horseshoe Rhinolophus hipposideros, lesser mouse-eared Myotis blythii, Steppe whiskered Myotis aurascens, Geoffroy’s Myotis emarginatus, Leisler’s Nyctalus leisleri, and a long-eared Plecotus sp., with European free-tailed Tadarida teniotis, long-fingered bat Myotis capaccinii, Savi’s pipistrelle Hypsugo savii, Kuhl’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus kuhlii, and probable Mehely’s horseshoe Rhinolophus mehelyi recorded using detectors – but not captured – so we need to go back just to find this beauty alone!
On this research trip we also had the pleasure of the company of Chris Corben and Kim Livengood who wonderufully enhanced the Anabat information for all our group. We plan to collaborate with Chris Corben and Kim Livengood in Greece again in coming years, when time allows him to do this.
Rhodes – June 2014
On Rhodes, the bats were fewer, but we had quality and not quantity and still caught 11 species on the trip – and made audio recordings of a further 2 species. Anatolian serotine Eptesicus Anatolicus, the blonde serotine, was the big highlight capture of this trip, so not bad!
Kefalonia – May and October 2013
We made two trips to Kefalonia as it is a large island. We did both of these in collaboration with Elena Padatou and 11 bat species were confirmed as present on Kefalonia having been caught and identified at various locations, with a further 5 possible species recorded on Anabat or Petterson. Species included lesser horseshoe Rhinolophus hipposideros, Blasius’s horseshoe Rhinolophus blasii, Mediterranean horseshoe Rhinolophus euryale, lesser mouse-eared Myotis blythii, Geoffroy’s Myotis emarginatus, long-fingered bat Myotis capaccinii, Kuhl’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus kuhlii, soprano pipistrelle Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Savi’s pipistrelle Hypsugo savii, Leisler’s Nyctalus leisleri, and Schreibers’ Miniopterus schreibersii.
Crete – 2011 and 2012
We caught 15 of the 17 species recorded as being present on Crete during two trips to Crete;
Kuhl’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus kuhlii, Hanaki’s pipistrelle Pipistrellus hanaki, Savi’s pipistrelle Hypsugo savii, lesser mouse-eared Myotis blythii, long-fingered bat Myotis capaccinii, Blasius’s horseshoe Rhinolophus blasii, greater horseshoe Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, lesser horseshoe Rhinolophus hipposideros, Balkan long-eared Plecotus kolombatovici, Schreiber’s’ Miniopterus schreibersii, European free-tailed Tadarida teniotis, Alpine long-eared Plecotus macrobullaris, Leisler’s Nyctalus leisleri, whiskered bat Myotis mystacinus, and Nathusius’ pipistrelle Pipistrellus nathusii.
Both the smallest and the largest of the European bats are found on Crete. It is a wonderful island.
